Award winning urban renewal project demonstrating a sustainable approach to social housing.

Located within 1ha city block bound by Walker, Phillip, Morehead and Kettle Street in Redfern, NSW this vibrant and contemporary neighbourhood revitalisation project comprises 106 dwellings within low to medium rise built form, accommodating families, elderly and disabled people in need.

Following an invited competitive design process, we were engaged by Housing NSW to prepare an architectural and landscape proposal for 40 townhouses and 66 apartments (18 adaptable) and their subsequent documentation.

The scheme consists of four 3 to 4 storey apartment buildings, which anchor the corners of the block and ‘bookend’ the townhouses that address Morehead and Walker Streets. Strong design elements define each corner with colour and form together with cantilevered balconies that wrap around masonry elements. Eight townhouse types were developed, together with one and two bedroom unit types which maximise solar access and natural ventilation with an innovative ‘open’ gallery access core. The townhouses feature an array of façade treatments, using innovative combinations of colours and materials.

The design is of its place, responding to the high-rise towers of the McKell Building and Poets Corner to the east and the 2 storey historic terraces to the south.

It was the first public housing project in NSW, and second nationally, to receive a 5 Star Green Star rating for its greywater treatment and re-use for bathrooms and irrigation, solar boosted hot water photovoltaics for common area lighting, and careful selection of materials.

The project has won multiple awards including:
