About us

LFA is an award-winning boutique practice that has accomplished urban design, planning, architecture and landscape projects throughout Australia since 1977. 

Led by Alf Lester and Steve Anders, we harness the depth and breadth of our interdisciplinary staff to offer trusted urban solutions that pave the way for progressive and sustainable city making.

Alf Lester

Founding Director

Alf formed LFA in 1977 and has been responsible for the direction, co-ordination and execution of LFA’s major urban design, planning, architectural and landscape projects.

Alf has particular expertise in sustainable, water-based residential masterplanning, and was responsible for the award winning Twin Waters, Shell Cove, Waterways and Waterside projects.

A fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects, member of the Planning Institute of Australia, and member of numerous design and planning review panels across metropolitan Sydney, Alf provides trusted depth of expertise across all facets of our work.


Steve Anders


Steve is responsible for design quality and innovation in urban design, masterplanning and architectural projects.

With over 30 years’ experience, he has particular expertise in large scale greenfield master planning and urban renewal projects. Adept at working from the strategic level down to detailed design, Steve creatively leads project teams to ensure the design integrity.

Steve is an Associate of the Australian Institute of Architects and a member of the UDIA Urban Development Committee.


Carla Mamaril


Since joining LFA in 2010, Carla has played a key role in urban design and planning projects from inception to completion.

She demonstrates particular strengths in greenfield precinct masterplanning, urban renewal and urban design guidelines, working at the senior level as well as the production of final deliverables. Carla also leads LFA’s visual communications, marketing and brand identity.

In addition to her role at LFA, Carla is a Sessional Staff member at the University of New South Wales as a tutor for the Master of Urban Development and Design program.


Jason Duda


Experienced in masterplanning, urban design, strategic and statutory planning, Jason has a strong technical knowledge of legislation, codes, policy combined with documentation experience to provide project direction and ensure value propositions for clients.

Prior to joining LFA, Jason coordinated the mapping, data analysis and graphic production for the Greater Sydney Region Plan and District Plans. 

He has also provided planning evidence for court matters and coordinated consultant teams to prepare planning and design packages for commercial, educational, institutional, residential and retail development of various scales.
